The Meteorological Institute

This Meteorological Institute, designed to accommodate a specific program, is created with abstract forms to represent interlocked house shaped forms: a reflection of and homage to the surrounding neighborhood. The complex is made up of two buildings, and each building is made up of two forms. Each building is completely transparent through to the core, in both directions. There is a centrally locked core of elevators, stairs, storage, and restrooms. One building houses labs and research spaces, and students and classroom spaces in the other. There will be a central, stepped down courtyard between the two buildings to force interaction with the outdoors and a sense of community between the buildings. Each building exposed publicly on one side, and turned privately away on the other. The design highlights communication between research and teaching, private and public space, light and dark, one building and the other, and the indoors and the outdoors, and includes lots of student work spaces, moments for reflection and work. It is programmatically organized to have repetitive elements in the same places per floor as often as possible for way finding.
